- Flexiv Ltd., creator of the world’s first adaptive robotic arm combining direct force control with advanced AI, launches its new solutions along with the first debut of its adaptive robot arm Rizon at the China market in 2019 CIIF (China International Industrial Fair).

Flexiv utilizes high-performance force control, computer vision and AI to adapt Rizon to the complex environment, accomplishing complex tasks requiring fine "hand-eye coordination" that used to be limited in human practice.
The first three application scenarios include: plugging connectors with wire harness, precision component assembling, and soft-material surface processing. In the past, these tasks rely heavily on manual work, challenging product consistency and production line management.
Plugging connectors with wire harness is a common work scenario in the industrial manufacturing field, and requirements for automatic plugging also keep increasing due to the wide variety of connectors and functions.
With adaptive robots, Flexiv combines the world's leading AI system with high-performance force control capabilities to identify plug models and positional attitudes in complex environments and cable configurations without external assistance. It can avoid obstacles in real time, and adapt to unknown disturbance and deviations, thus efficiently complete tasks like grabbing, inserting, and assembling. In the assembly scenario of precision components, precision components often have various shapes, different stiffness, complicated operation procedures, and the risk of damage due to slight careless operation. This puts forward high requirements to force control and real-time hand-eye cooperation during the assembling.
The Flexiv adaptive robot can adjust the force applied to the part in real time through its own force feedback and control system. By simulating the human assembling, it can overcome errors in all aspects of the process from the actual production line, thus improving the automation level of high-precision assembly. The robot system also incorporates an AI-based hierarchical intelligent architecture, which summarizes and learns various process details in a large number of assembling processes, and gradually forms more general and standardized assembling skills.
Surface processing of soft materials still needs to be done manually by workers in most cases. Flexiv adaptive robots achieved breakthroughs in simulating human hand operations - through complex force control capabilities, it can perform complex surface polishing and moving methods, which can then be used to finely grind and polish complex textures of different materials, and it is compatible with a variety of tools. Moreover, it can perfectly fit the surface of complex workpieces without accurate scanning, positioning tooling or trajectory teaching, and monitor surface treatment in real time to ensure processing quality.
For problems difficult to solve by existing automation, more flexible and universal adaptive robots are needed.
In the context of industrial progress, the diversification of manufacturing has become possible, and many more sophisticated and complex operational automation requirements have emerged. In the case where traditional automation is difficult to adapt quickly, we still need to rely on a large amount of manpower, meaning the quality consistency is also difficult to guarantee.
Taking the automobile manufacturing industry as an example, highly automated tasks can be seen everywhere in the main process of automobile production; yet in the final assembling process, the automation rate is always inferior to others. A large number of flexible and variable parts, complex assembling processes, and low-precision assembling lines have become a huge obstacle to the automatic assembly of traditional equipment.
The same situation also occurs in 3C electronics, furniture manufacturing, mobile phone manufacturing, and many other industries. Traditional automation equipment often cannot meet the requirements of precision assembling and polishing. It needs better and more comprehensive flexibility to deal with a large number of parts that are irregular, fragile and have limited material consistency during the assembling and production process.
Compared with traditional robots, adaptive robots can effectively adapt to changes in the working environment and handle complex tasks. Previously, Flexiv released a white paper summarizing the characteristics of adaptive robots: high tolerance of position variance, great disturbance rejection and transferrable intelligence across different tasks; combined with AI technology to bring more flexibility to production.
